Sharing knowledge and enhancing each other's capability is at the core of BCA philosophy. We believe in the power of connecting with and contributing to each others' creative practice. We systematically mobilize experts and leaders within out community to mentor and train other creatives. This is a key part of keeping our collective energy strong and growing.

Playwrights Lab

Yearly event, since 2019

Driven by a desire to see our stories told by us, with our creatives in lead roles, BCA held our inaugural Playwrights Lab in 2019. The response to the inaugural lab was incredibly positive with over fifty people attending the public reading at Auckland Theatre Company. This feedback encouraged us to expand and sustain this kaupapa which is now a yearly BCA event.

Writers Workshop

There is an obvious gap in the literature of Aotearoa, obvious at least to those of us who know that Black folks have been on this whenua for the last fifty if not more years. Propelled by the desire to see more stories written by black writers we held our inaugural  short story writers workshop in November 2020 with renowned British-Jamaican author Alex Wheatle.

Writing with Pen

Poetry workshop

Propelled by the desire to see more poetry written by black poets we held our inaugural poetry workshop in Feb 2020 with renowned American poet Sonya Renee Taylor.

With support from the Mātātuhi Foundation a detailed process was outlined that invited applicants to join a lively workshop session with Sonya; complete a draft of a poem and receive feedback from experienced novelists; and finally, submit to an established literary journal.

This workshop was a first and we hope to  continue to offer poetry workshops on an annual basis. Applicants who are involved in the workshop then join a dedicated poets group to continue developing skills and share work.
